Pugwash is the birthplace of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs — the Cumberland County Northumberland Shore community where Cyrus Eaton (the Cleveland industrialist and philanthropist born in Pugwash) hosted the first Pugwash Conference in 1957 (bringing together Eastern and Western bloc scientists to discuss nuclear disarmament — a gathering that eventually led to the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the Pugwash organization in 1995 alongside Joseph Rotblat) and where the annual Gathering of the Clans (one of Nova Scotia's finest Scottish Highland festivals, held at Pugwash each July 1st) celebrates the community's dual identity as both Nobel Peace Prize hub and Scottish heritage village on the warm-water Northumberland Shore.
