Grand Étang is the Cabot Trail's most authentically Acadian community and the Cape Breton coast's finest French heritage village — the Inverness County community on the Gulf of St. Lawrence shore where the Acadian families who settled the western Cape Breton coast in the 18th century (and survived the upheavals of the Deportation through geographic isolation and determined community solidarity) maintained a French-speaking community that is one of the oldest continuously French-speaking communities on Cape Breton Island — home of the Acadian Museum and the Grand Étang community's Acadian traditions of fiddle music, step dancing, and French-language community institutions that make it one of the most culturally vital Acadian communities in Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Highlands.
