Gold River is Vancouver Island's most remote inland community and the gateway to Nootka Sound — the Vancouver Island community in the Gold River valley where the MV Uchuck III (one of Canada's last working coastal freight and passenger vessels, making weekly supply runs to the remote communities and fishing lodges of Nootka Sound and Kyuquot Sound) and the Nootka Sound Heritage Site (where Captain James Cook made the first documented European landing on the BC coast in 1778, establishing British maritime sovereignty over the Pacific Northwest) define a community built from scratch in 1965 as a planned forestry city, with the unique distinction of being one of BC's most completely designed instant communities — relocated from the old Gold River townsite when the Tahsis mill was built.
