Burritts Rapids is the Rideau Canal's most perfectly preserved lock station village and the community that looks exactly as it did when the Duke of Wellington's engineers built the canal in 1832 — the Edwardsburgh/Cardinal Township community where the Burritts Rapids Lock (Lock 16 of the Rideau Canal, UNESCO World Heritage, one of the most photogenic and least-visited lock stations on the entire Rideau system — a single manually-operated lock in a landscape of stone lockmaster's cottage, original lock walls, and canal-side cedars that has remained virtually unchanged since 1832) and the Burritts Rapids Heritage Village (a surviving 19th-century canalside settlement where every structure dates from the canal era, making it the most complete Rideau heritage village in existence) define Ontario's most untouched heritage canal landscape.
