Alert Bay is the Kwakwaka'wakw cultural capital and home of the world's tallest totem pole — the Cormorant Island community accessible only by ferry from Port McNeill where the U'mista Cultural Centre (one of Canada's most significant Indigenous cultural institutions, housing the repatriated potlatch collection seized by the Canadian government in 1921 when the potlatch was banned — the masks, coppers, and ceremonial objects that were taken from the Kwakwaka'wakw people and returned in 1980 after a 60-year campaign) and the 53-metre Alert Bay totem pole (the tallest freestanding totem pole in the world, carved in 1973 by a team of Kwakwaka'wakw master carvers) make Alert Bay the single most important Kwakwaka'wakw cultural destination in the world.
